How to Use the Cotinine Saliva Test

This section provides step-by-step instructions for completing the at-home cotinine saliva test, including how to prepare, read your results, and upload a photo.

Before You Begin

  • Do not eat, drink, or use e-cigarettes/vapes for at least 10 minutes before starting.

  • Wash your hands and make sure you’re in a clean, flat space.

Step-by-Step

  1. Open the test kit – Remove the test device and collection pad.

  2. Collect your sample – Place the pad in your mouth until it is soaked with saliva (usually 2–3 minutes).

  3. Insert the pad – Place the pad into the test device as shown in the instructions.

  4. Wait – Put the device on a flat surface and wait the recommended time (usually 5 minutes).

  5. Read the results – Look at the test window:

    • Two lines = Negative (no cotinine detected)

    • One line = Positive (cotinine detected)

    • No line = Invalid (test didn’t work, repeat if directed)

  6. Take a photo – Snap a clear picture of the results.

  7. Upload your photo – Go to the Insight app and submit the photo through the upload option.

Tips for Success

  • Good lighting helps you capture a clear photo.

  • If the test seems unclear or fails, contact the study team for support.

  • Keep the device flat and undisturbed during the wait time.
