What to Expect if You Join the Study

This section walks you through what participation looks like over time, including daily app check-ins, short surveys, at-home saliva testing, and how the study is structured across multiple waves – all completed remotely.

If you join, you’ll take part in several short activities every six months for about three years.

Each six-month period is called a “wave.”

During each wave, you will:

  1. Use our mobile app to answer two quick surveys each day for 30 days (morning and evening). Each takes just a few minutes. They’ll ask simple questions about your vaping or tobacco use that day, such as what kind of product you used, what flavor, or how you were feeling.

  2. Complete one short survey at the end of the 30 days (about 15–25 minutes).

  3. Do a quick saliva test at home to measure nicotine exposure. This test works a lot like a COVID test. We’ll mail you the kit, you’ll swab your mouth, and then you’ll snap a photo of your results to upload in the app.

Between waves, you’ll get periodic check-in reminders from our team so you don’t lose touch. When it’s time for your next wave to start, we’ll send you clear reminders and instructions so you know exactly what to do and when to begin.

The study is entirely remote, which means you can participate from wherever you are — no in-person visits required.
